Dasari said when NTR decided to enter politics, he asked Dasari to direct a powerful social message movie as his last movie before politics. This came "Bobbili puli".

First we have to get into the forward caste completely annaa before and i also know couple of my friends who are kapus and also reddys ( palli reddys) who are also BCs. so first we dont really deserve saying that we are completely forward.

My friends in AP are fighting for supermacy of their castes. The supermacy of caste can only be decided by person sitting in hot seat(Chief Ministers' chair). Indirectly, Reddy's are superior presently. Kapu's are ready to work with Reddy's but not Kamma's. So, Kapu's are subordinates to both Reddy's & Kamma's. Whether Chiranjeevi can change this equation is to be seen?

ReplyDeleteI had a chance to see couple of chiranjeevi movies and on both occasions came out of movie hall before interval time. He does not deserve the tag of great actor. He just deserves to be a dubbing artist but somehow ended up getting plum roles. That's because of vaccum created with exit of ageing great artists like NTR, ANR etc. Chiranjeevi just filled the gap and managed to rule as other young actors were still trying to establish. At least now, he realised that he cannot compete with present actors, so, he is acting in films with social messages. Politics is last resort for unfit people. He may have a great fan following, but most of them are groomed & cultivated to suit his requirements. His lady luck will not favour him in politics whatever his caste tag is.

The standard & intellignece of kapu people is seen by comments written by some of their caste people above. Do they have dignity, character etc? The words they use often are such derogatory that it appears as if kapu people are really fucking their mothers. What is the use of being in software sector or other sectors when they don't have character? These kapu people who are shining must have been cross breeds(born out of extra marital relations) and they may not be really kapus. Chiranjeevi can't do anything. Even if chiranjeevi forms a kapu party, kapus will vote for congress/TD, if these parties throw some country liquour(which indicates kapu's standard). Chiranjeevi knows he is lame duck.

What contributed most to Kamma development was their taking to education in a big way. Among the non-Brahmin communities, Kammas were the first to take to modern education in large numbers. In Guntur district alone, 130 High schools were established by their initiative in a period of about 10 years. Jamindars like those of Challapalli and Kapileswarapuram founded schools and libraries.

A number of leaders like Prof NG Ranga, Gottipati Brahmaiah, Parvathaneni Veeraiah Choudary,Kalluri Chandramouli and Veluvolu Sitaramaiah who has provided quarters for Andhra Congress head office in Tenali at his business premises when there was ban in early forties,came up and took prominent part in the national freedom movement. Many relinquished their lands and actively worked for the land distribution reforms. During the twentieth century, several Kammas were attracted to leftist ideals and led to the establishment of the Communist party as a strong political force in the state until the mid sixties. Later again, since the 1980s, they have dominated the state politics with people like NT Rama Rao (NTR) and Nara Chandrababu Naidu at the helm who gave a progressive direction to Andhra Pradesh.

The Kakatiyas rose to prominence in the 11th century. As the Chalukyas declined in power, the Kakatiya clan wielded real power. By the early 12th century, the Kakatiya clan origined from the kamma clan who were the zamindars and land owners of the western Chalukyas. They declared independence and began expanding their kingdom. By the end of the century, their kingdom had reached the Bay of Bengal and it stretched between the Godavari and the Krishna rivers. The empire reached its zenith under Ganapati who was its greatest ruler. At its largest, the empire included most of modern day Andhra Pradesh and parts of Orissa, Maharasthra, Chattisgarh and Karnataka. Ganapati was succeeded by his daughter Rudramamba who was probably the first ever queen who ruled in her own right in South India, if not in all of India. The Kakatiya dynasty lasted three centuries and was probably the longest lived Telugu kingdom in history.

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF THE KAKATIYAS
The Kakatiya kingdom flourished between 1000 -1232 AD in the region of today's Andhra Pradesh. Their capital was at Warangal, in north andhra pradesh.
Dotted with innumerable little man made lakes the region used to produce abundant crops round the year. It was also fairly well forested. Warangal kingdom was reputed for its cotton textiles, woollen carpets, steel and diamonds from ancient times. (the future city of Hyderabad was marked by some villages and the fort of Golkonda controlled by the Kakatiyas.) There are thousands of archeological ruins in good condition dating from these times, besides literary works throw a great deal of light on the society. The later Kakatiyas excelled in sculpture, particularly in a dark dolerite marked by a high polish. There is some evidence of traditional martial arts being popularly practiced. In the field of music and dance too, the kakatiya heritage is important.
Many elements of today's common man's way of life (roughly, popular culture) of Andhra Pradesh were also in vogue during Kakatiya times. If today's Yadgiri or Subbayya were to get into a time machine and visit the Kakatiya centuries they would be perfectly at home, even though it was almost a thousand years ago.
The kakatiya state was derived from the preceding Kalyani Chalukyan. Interestingly, unlike most Indian dynasties who forged descent from nothing less than the sun and the moon, the Kakatiyas were proud to say they were of humble origin, styling themselves nothing grander than descended from bonded labourers, i.e. in effect hereditary slaves. "Saamanta vishti vamsah ". There is evidence they were descended from nomadic community of Yerukulas, which until recently was semi nomadic all over south India. In turn there is some connection of the yerukulas to a very remote origin of yadavas
Usually communities in India have "family deities" : the kakatiyas are said to have "kakati devi" as their favoured mother goddess. (personally I think this is a late development and connected to spread of Jainism which absorbed local cults. Tribal totem of gourd is more likely.)
The Kakatiya state had humble beginnings: Vetaraju or Beta Raja I ( AD 1000-1030), a military officer of the Chalukya empire was appointed local governor of the area around Mahbubabad- Koravi, near today's Warangal. Mahbubabad today is a small peripheral district village-town with a railway platform and Koravi has a couple of old temples. In an inscription at Kazipet, Beta is referred to as a samanta raja, subordinate king. This roughly means he was an important Knight of the Chalukya court who was promoted to Baron with his own small fort, domain, retainers, infantry and cavalry, which he had to bring on to the battlefield during war.
The main activity of the governor was tax collection and making sure there was no disturbance to the peace. Taxes were collected mainly from the farmers and merchants. Farmers of the area had to give part of their crop as tax to the local tax collectors, who pilfered as much as they could and gave the remaining proceeds to the governor's men. In turn they took a cut and sent the proceeds to the regional governor. Finally after repeated pilfering at various levels, some amount reached the kakatiya treasury who in turn sent some amount to the Chalukyan emperor at Kalyani, north karnataka. Beta was successful as governor and the koravi area became his perpetual "fiefdom".
His son Prola Raja ( Prola I ) was the next, and ruled from 1030 -1075. (elsewhere, around this time a group of frenchmen -- Normans -- invaded England and displaced the Anglo-Saxons ). Prola's successses on the battlefield induced the Chalukyan emperor to assign him the Hanmakonda fief as well. Today Hanmakonda is the northern suburb of Warangal town. Prola's forces even captured far off Kanchipuram in a war with the imperial Cholas (north tamilnadu of today). Usually in those days campaigns were nothing more than raids for plunder, when the loser handed over some gold and g after haggling, and the victorious army marched back home laden with the loot. The loser was left alone to plunder his taxpayers even more. In very rare cases if the loser was too stubborn there would be wholesale slaughter of the king and his group.
Beta Raja II was the next boss of the area from 1075 -1110 AD. He too added territories to the Chalukya emperor's dominions. like the capture of Sabbi mandala (northern part of today's Karimnagar district), besides taking part in wars with Malavas and Cholas.
The next governor, Prola Raja II was able to proclaim himself an independent monarch, as the kalyani chalukyan empire started disintegrating. Thus the Kakatiya kingdom was launched, to last up to 1326 AD. (The influence however was felt far longer, since the founders of the subsequent Vijayanagar were soldiers and officers of the kakatiya kingdom. )
Prola was followed by Kakatiya Rudra ( 1159 -1195 AD). He expanded further east as far as the sea. He spent a great deal of his reign subduing and killing off rival relatives. To atone for this, in later years he built many temples.
The next king was Kakatiya Mahadeva (1195 -1198 AD). He seems to have been occupied his very short rule in battles with his northern neighbours the Yadavas, erstwhile fellow barons of the chalukyas, who likewise founded an independent kingdom after the Chalukyas disappeared. ( The Yadavas had their capital at Devagiri in neighbouring Maharashtra. Today Devagiri is the town of Daulatabad, near Ellora, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra state.
Mahadeva's son Kakatiya Ganapati was actually taken prisoner by the Yadavas of Devagiri , who kept him with them for twelve years as a hostage for peace, before releasing him. After a while, Ganapati managed to expand the kakatiya kingdom, southwards up to up to Kanchipuram. In the north east, the Kakatiyas expanded up to Srikakulam bordering today's Orissa. Noting that the incessant petty warfare with neighbours was a d on the kingdom, he saw to it the conquered kings and chieftains entered into matrimonial alliances with his family. Jayapa was made a senior Kakatiya general, but is remembered for his musicological and dance writings. He wrote a treatise on music and dance called Nritya Ratnavali. The sculptures in a shrine built by him illustrated the text of the book. They are not well known : only recently people are beginning to appreciate Jayapa's studies. Thus by various means Kakatiya Ganapati expanded the kakatiya kingdom to cover most of present day Andhra Pradesh.
Ganapati took steps to improve trade, by remitting various taxes : in particular, regularised customs duties for sea going trade, as can be seen in an inscription at Motupalli. (Among the interesting things implemented --it was against the law to say "Tamils are quarrelsome" . The systematisation of revenue (taxes, plunder) spurred trade and commerce : the various irrigation works started giving results soon, and overall things seem to have been fairly peaceful.
Ganapati spent some of the revenue in planning a huge shrine at warangal fort, just beside the well designed old temple. But he ran out of money and it was never completed: if it had been completed, it would rank next to Konark and Rajput architecture. Today in Warangal fort, even in a ruined condition the incomplete structures and gateways are impressive, and serve as a showpiece of Kakatiya sculptors' and masons' art. Some pics soon.
During this time large migrations of people (several communities) from Dhar/ Gujarat ( likely Pramara territory) took place. Among the groups was one military man Gangeya Sahini who took up service under the Kakatiyas. (The pramaras also written as parmar, pawar, and ponwar today are descended from the deccani Rashtrakutas). These migrants did well for themselves as regional commanders and provincial governors. Most of the migrants generally had a martial tradition, and often surname Kayastha or Sahini. (Thus Gangaya Sahini descendants got the surname Ganganeni, Tripuraya Sahini 's family became Tripuraneni --etc, these names ending in -neni are found among a section of Kamma and Velama communities today.) There were also fairly large migrations from Ahichchatra, Kannauj and Kashmir too. There seem to have been several such migrations. ( It appears the migrations are linked to disturbances, unsettled social conditions in northwestern india, domino effect caused by mainly islamic turkish tribal raids displacing peoples including other turks). Gouds were prominent in kakatiya times as well, like the earlier kalyani chalukya times. Malyala gouda was a well known general and excavated reservoirs. Reddis are mentioned in hundreds of inscriptions. Settis controlled the trade, and there were many groups among them too.
Ganapati was innovative in shall we say, women's rights. Usually women didn't get much chance to openly run things, while they may have intrigued in the background through harems and the like. His daughter Rudraamba was married to Veerabhadra of Nidada vole, West Godavari. Ganapati had no son, so instead chose his daughter Rudraamba to suceed him as king. After some initial hiccups she rallied perfectly well --sufficient to rule for almost ninety years (1209 -1296). Arms wise too her rule seemed quite efficient, since the empire was enlarged further, and the Cholas and Pandyas too were again plundered. Her daughter Ruyyamma was married to Annaya Deva, a nobleman of southern kalinga ( in the kakatiya dominions). She successfully put down the rayalseema rebellion of Ambadevaya Sahini (ambaneni) who became a loyal feudatory thenceforth.
The next kakatiya king was Rudraamba's grandson Pratapa Rudra II , groomed for the job from infancy. He ruled from 1296 to 1323. During this time the kakatiyas were very successful in the usual looting and plunder campaigns against the Yadavas, and as far south as the Pandyas ( Madura) and the Cheras of calicut. At the same time the turkish delhi sultans also began expanding southwards : they were able to defeat the marathi Yadavas, whose king became a loyal ally of the turks. The wars of the Sultans with Warangal were not very succesful initially--in local legend is said the sultan and several generals were captured and let go seven times--but the kakatiyas didnt quite understand the technology of guns and cannon and preferred to fight the old chivalrous cavalry way. Their steel was world famous as Ukku or wootz "damascus" steel, though. Ultimately after some wars, and by disunity among the feudal groups plus the usual bribery.. Pratapa Rudra was captured. The Sultan wanted to repay the compliment at delhi of restoring his life and liberty, and is said wanted to restore Prataparudra to warangal as a governor/subordinate ruler----but pratapa rudra it is said committed suicide en route. But the sultans' agents couldn't hold the area for long, and the soldiers of the kakatiyas learned their lessons well, started using new technology, and ejected the turkish military governors from most of the areas very soon.
As a matter of fact the problem was not just technology that the Kakatiyas neglected: nor was it their 'chivalrous' nature. The fault lay in the structure of the army and society. In the first place the farmer had to pay taxes to somebody : he didnt really care who extracted it, kakatiya or turkish so long as he was left alone afterwards. Then various feudal leaders had their bands of followers and armed men, cavalry etc which they brought into the field. During battles, rivalry and falling out between commanders could be fatal, which is eactly what what happened.
There was a community called padmanayaka, a reform minded anti caste group. (by the way some of the Kammas and possibly Velamas of today have padmanayaka ancestors). They were employed by Kakatiya Rudra and gave a good account of themselves. But the clan rivalries remained for centuries: Velamas vs. Reddis vs. nayaks(present day kapus in coastal andhra) vs etc. (they also traditionally despised each other, due to professional rivalry). All these mutual jealousies were taken to extremes.
During a campaign with the Delhi sultan's forces in 1323 AD a battle was met: one section was jealous of the other being favoured at the court: so they decided on a battleday to demonstrate just who was what, by allowing the other to be hammered by the turks. The idea being they would then jump into the fray and save the day. But Bobba reddi and his men realised things were going wrong, and they finally attacked too late. The padmanayaka battalions were destroyed : next was the turn of the Reddis, and finally Pratapa rudra was captured : the desperate suicidal attack was not enough. Besides some padma nayakas or leaders also intrigued with the Sultan. Ganna Nayak, another padmanayaka was promised he'd be made the governor of the kingdom: so he became Malik Maqbul. But he wasn't successful, so had to go away to Delhi. He made a name for himself there ( he was later titled Kiwam-ul -mulk and held Multan as fief, and was an important associate of Firuz Shah Tughlak). Afterward, the erstwhile Kakatiya barons and lords came together and rapidly ejected the Turks, but were always more interested in forming their own petty independent kingdoms. Thus arose the Velama and Reddy kingdoms besides the Nayaks under Musunoori Kapaaya Nayaka and Prolaya Nayaka who tried to retain the kakatiya kingdom in some form.
The brother of Prataparudra migrated to Jagdalpur ( now in Chattisgad) and set up another kingdom around 1326 AD. (This is said to have survived in some way or the other till 1950 when the kingdoms were merged into the republic of India). The natives of Jagdalpur maintain some link to Warangal still.
Some of the officers of the fallen Kakatiya kingdom were captured by the Sultan, induced to take up islam, and sent back as governors of the southern provinces. It is possible (just my guess) the Sultan and his generals remembered how they were captured and set free by the kakatiya knights...so it was payback time. According to some accounts Harihara and Bukka Raya were sent as governors by the sultan, who hoped the locals would listen to them and give up guerilla warfare against the sultans army. Already the sultans did not rule the coastal area. However the locals made things pretty hot for Harihara Bukka too, and finally they threw off both islam and allegiance to the sultan and commenced upon a interesting career. They founded the state of Vijayanagar.

Like Scheduled castes / Tribes, Kapus are outcastes. They are better of than SC/ST but with a status of ‘Backward’. No one knows the history of any community, except something written in books by some drunkard fellows. In Karnataka, there is a chapter in social studies, which shows Sonia Gandhi as freedom fighter. History can be changed at whims and fancies of book writers. But no one can change status of any community. The fact is kapus are better off than SC/ST but can never be equivalent to Reddy’s/Kamma’s. Chiranjeevi or Dasari or any Kapu knows that and thus are content with whatever is thrown at them. Kapus can never, can never, change any political equations. They are always at bottom of hierarchy in political structure. Don’t waste your energy in fighting.

Well i asked someone about the current discussion. I was told this, i dont intent to hurt any one but wanted to get it cleared.
